Scott Grove Workshop Review

John OBrien | Published on 3/15/2023
On February 11th and 12th, 2023, Scott Grove gave a 2 day workshop. The first day was on compound veneering and the 2nd day was on Inlay.
Compound Veneering:
Compound veneering is the method of applying a veneer that bends in two directions over a surface, like a waterfall edge on a table top. Scott showed us two methods to accomplish this. The first method was to make a mold of the edge, and then use this mold to clamp a wedge of veneer against the profile. The veneer first needed to be made flexible and pliable by applying a special flattening solution.
The second method involved ironing on the flexible veneer in a manner that created folds. The folds were then divided in half and pressed with the hot iron until flattened out. The glue was applied to both the veneer and the substrate and allowed to dry first.

INLAY:
The inlay portion of the workshop consisted of Scott demonstrating several methods and techniques of applying crushed stone, shell, wire, opals, and resin into various voids or routed recesses.
